VERY IMPORTANT DETAILS
THERE ARE MAJOR CHANGES FOR 2010

WE HAVE MADE MAJOR CHANGES TO OUR SHUTTLE SERVICE. THE SPECIFICS DEPEND ON HOW YOU ARE TRAVELING TO DENALI. We have done this to accommodate guests who wish to get groceries without having to bring them from Anchorage as we no longer have a store at the hostel.

For Those Arriving on The Alaska Railroad Train

After you depart the train, you will find a shuttle van in the parking lot that has “Salmon Bake” painted on the side. That is your ride. Look to the left as you exit the train. They will take you to their property about 5 minutes away.

There you will find the Canyon Market & Café. It is a great little store that has everything you need for your stay, including a deli and box lunches for your trip into the park. Inside the Market you will find the Sled Dog Liquor store if you want any liquor, beer or wine, this is the place to get it. Just one request, if you aren’t eating at the Market Café, please don’t sit at the tables their customers need.

Next door is the Denali Park Salmon Bake. Here you will find some great food, a beautiful bar and live music.

The Hostel Shuttle will pick you up at 5:30 PM between the Market and the Salmon Bake. If you want to stay awhile and enjoy a dinner or drinks, you can! The Salmon Bake will secure your baggage for you and you can come to the hostel on our 9:30 PM shuttle.

When you are taking a bus or tour into the park, you don’t have to worry either. When you get back to the Wilderness Access Center (the WAC), call the Salmon Bake and they will come pick you up and take you to the Market. There is a free phone located just outside the entrance to the WAC and their number is listed there. We can also provide it to you at the hostel. The Salmon Bake shuttle will be looking for you right where we dropped you off that morning.

If you get back to the WAC a little too late to get a ride to the Market in time to get our shuttle don’t worry. Call the Salmon Bake and tell them. If they can’t get you in time, they will let us know and we will come get you on our way back to the hostel. We really hope we don’t have to make a second stop, so please don’t overuse this. This is generally intended for the 9:30 PM shuttle, but we will try to work with you on the 5:30 as well, since many of you have already reserved your tours and buses and were planning to arrive at the WAC close to 5:30 PM. If we have already left for the hostel on our 5:30 shuttle, they will give you a ride to the Salmon Bake and you can enjoy yourself there while you wait for our 9:30 PM Shuttle.

The morning shuttles will ONLY take you to the WAC or McKinley Village and NOT the Market so plan your grocery needs accordingly.

REMEMBER, if you are not on the shuttle in time to leave at 5:30 PM, you will be left behind. The same goes for the 9:30 PM shuttle, but missing that one will cause you much more problems and expense finding a way to the hostel 14 miles away. Our morning shuttles also MUST LEAVE ON TIME. We will not wait for you and we will not look for you. We have a schedule that other guests are depending on and deserve.

MORNING SHUTTLES TO THE PARK

Our first shuttle service leaves the hostel daily at 6:35 AM, getting you to the WAC (where all park shuttle buses and tours depart) before 7:00 AM. We also provide a shuttle at 8:20 AM, arriving at the WAC at about 8:40 AM. Stops at McKinley Village are only made if requested.

We have a sign-up board at the hostel office for you to use to sign up for shuttle use other than your original pick-up.

This means that you shouldn't make reservations for the Park shuttle buses departing before 7:00 AM and not reserve buses which return after 9:30 PM unless you have your own vehicle.

THERE IS NO WAY FOR YOU TO RETURN TO THE HOSTEL FROM THE PARK AFTER 9:30 PM UNLESS YOU FIND A RIDE WITH SOMEONE ELSE, HITCHHIKE, PAY FOR AN EXPENSIVE TAXI OR OUR SHUTTLE (WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE). OR YOU CAN WALK THE 14 MILES.

If your plans change, just call and let us know. Remember, be at the right place at the right time, we won't go looking for you, and the shuttles leave ON TIME.

For Those Arriving on The Park Connection Bus

The Park Connection Bus will drop you off at the Princess Wilderness Lodge in the Canyon. You will need to cross the highway and walk south, back toward Anchorage about a block*.

There you will find the Canyon Market & Café. It is a great little store that has everything you need for your stay including a deli and box lunches for your trip into the park. Inside the Market you will find the Sled Dog Liquor store if you want any liquor, beer or wine this is where you get it. Just one request, if you aren’t eating at the Market Café, please don’t sit at the tables their customers need.

Next door is the Denali Park Salmon Bake. Here you will find some great food, a beautiful bar and live music.

*If it is too far for you to walk from the Princess Wilderness Lodge, they have a trolley that can take you to the south end of their property called the Princess Canyon Lodge. The Market is just across the Highway from there. That would be cheating a little, but if you ask nicely and tip... . Alternatively you can call or ask your driver to call the Salmon Bake for them to come get you.
