| OTHER ACTIVITIES AND INFOMRATION: |
Check these options out for your Denali visit. There are also
hikes from our doorstep, as well as hikes right inside the National
Park.
BUS TRIPS INTO THE PARK: check out the Denali National
Park website, or call their toll-free reservations #: 1-800-622-7275. Keep in
mind that we are 13 miles, or a 20-minute drive, south of the Park
entrance.
Basically, you can drive the first 14 miles into the National Park
in your own vehicle, and after that you must be on a bus, a bike,
or in the air. There are 6-hour trips going back 53 miles, all the way up to 13-hour trips going 91 miles back into
the Park. There is also a camper bus that takes people to the various campgrounds in the Park as well
as backcountry campers to their reserved units. We do not recommend
the tours that Denali Park Resorts, the concessionaire
that runs all buses in the national park, sells. The tours are much
more expensive, dont let you off the bus to go for a hike,
and offer inconvenient departure times. The camper buses run frequently
throughout the day, allow you to get off one bus to go for a hike
and catch the next bus coming by, space available. The drivers of
the camper buses are also very knowledgeable and informative. This is a good way to see the park.
We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you make your reservations for
the Park camper buses IN ADVANCE, particularly if you are
only staying two nights in the area. Many visitors arrive and are
out of luck because the camper buses going into the National Park
do fill up. Of course this is not always the case, and at times
a person can walk into an open seat at just the right time. Generally,
particularly once the summer gets going (mid-June), you can
arrive on one day and make reservations for the following day. Park
camper bus reservations are the only local reservations that we
DO NOT book for our guests.
We also recommend checking out this website for descriptions
of the scenery at different points along the Park road, as well
as info on seeing the Park on your own.
HIKING: There are some great hikes that begin from or close to the Denali Visitors Center, just inside the Park entrance. See a map of the entrance area hikes along with descriptions on the Day Hiking page of the national park website.
Ranger led hikes are a great way to see the park and learn something along the way! For more information, see the Ranger Programs page on the national park website. These hikes are offered daily and often involve the purchase of a shuttle bus ticket, a drive into the park, and a hike at a pre-determined location. You can only sign up for these hikes in person no more than 48 hours in advance. There are also daily ranger programs at various places within the park. See above link for more information.
The FREE SLED DOG DEMONSTRATION offered by the Park is a
great intro to a very popular sport and means of transport in this
area, and I recommend that you fit it in. The demonstrations
are at 10am, 2pm and 4pm, and last about 30 minutes. Take the free park shuttle from the Visitors Center or Wilderness Access Center to the demonstration 30 min. before showtime.
The Denali Highway travels 130 miles east from Cantwell,
which is just 14 miles south of us at Carlo Creek. It is a dirt,
but now well-traveled, highway that moseys right on through the
Alaska Range. Lots of creeks and lakes make the journey an incredible
way to pass the time and see this area. Plan for lots of pot-holes and slow-going.
If you the time and patience to travel along leisurely, its
worth it!
Let us know if we can answer any other questions for you. We will
be happy to make your arrangements for you once you have perused
and know what you would like to try! There is no additional charge
to you, but the local operators give us a small commission which
goes a long way by the end of the summer. You can call us closer
to the time of your arrival if your plans are changing and we can
then make needed schedule changes or arrangements with the local
operators. You can also wait until you get here and we can help
you plan your local adventures then.
