DENALI MOUNTAIN MORNING HOSTEL & LODGE
guided fly-fishing
We are happy to suggest this tour provider.

ABOUT THE TRIP:

The provider of this tour offers guided and fully outfitted bank/wade fly fishing trips into the lakes and streams in the heart of the Alaska Range. Transportation is provided from Mountain Morning to and from the lake.

WHERE:

They primarily fish Chavay Lake, a private lake located 25 miles south of the Denali National Park entrance. The five-acre lake is situated in the Jack River Valley surrounded by spruce forest. Full-day trips allow travel time needed to access some of the area rivers and streams.

WHAT KIND OF FISH:

Arctic Grayling are the native and naturally reproducing species in the area. In addition, the lake offers a population of stocked Rainbow Trout.

WHAT TYPE OF FISHING:

They practice catch and release fly fishing using barbless hooks. Bank fishing is very productive and waders are available if you wish to use them.

SUITABILITY:

These trips are designed for all ages (over 12) and all levels of experience. The lake offers a great opportunity to learn the beginner basics or to practice your own technique. Their guides will teach the first time angler as well as help refine the experienced fly caster.

WHAT IF I'M A BEGINNER?:

Thier experienced but patient guides have taught many first time anglers and provide all the necessary tools and space to learn how to cast safely. You will learn the basics of fly equipment, dry and wet fly presentation, fish habitat, match the hatch theory and proper catch and release techniques.

FULL-DAY TRIPS:

Experienced anglers may wish to experience some of the area streams and rivers, which require longer travel times to access. Their guides know some great fishing holes, where they're biting and if the water clarity is good enough to fish successfully. Full day trips require a minimum of 2 anglers and lunch will be provided.

GUIDES:
The provider's guides are advanced first aid/CPR trained, insured, and all have current State of Alaska Fish and Game guide permits. By maintaining a maximum of 4 anglers per guide, we are able to provide as much instruction as each individual guest desires.

DEPARTURES:

Two scheduled half-day trip departures and one full-day trip departure daily include round trip transportation to our base at a Chavay Lake. Trips will arrive back at the hostel or the train depot in plenty of time for the noon train departure.

LUGGAGE:

If you wish to join the morning trip and need to be on the noon train, we suggest that you check out and leave your checked luggage at the hostel and bring your carry-on luggage with you for the trip. After fishing they will take you directly to the train depot instead of the hostel.

INCLUDED IN THE TRIP:

They supply roundtrip transportation, midweight fly rod and reel, line, flies, waders and all the instruction you need. For your convenience, there is a unisex porta-john toilet located near our headquarters at the lake. If you have your own rain-gear, we recommend you bring it; if necessary, we do have a limited number of loaners available.

YOU SHOULD BRING:

Rain gear (tops and pants), hat with a brim, eye protection (prescription or sun glasses), an extra pair of socks, and an extra layer of clothing. The most important thing to bring along is an open mind and adventurous attitude, to help fully appreciate the beauty of this Alaskan experience.

WEATHER:

The weather in Alaska can and will change dramatically and quickly. It is a good idea to be prepared for any conditions. Layering is a good way to prevent overheating or getting cold. It is not uncommon for it to be a sunny morning at the hostel, yet breezy and raining 20 miles away.

LICENSES:

Fishing Licenses are not included. Guests will need to either purchase the license online or buy one at the lake. They are $20.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST MOSQUITOES:

These critters not only feed our fish, but can feed on us as well. They can be annoying at times, so we recommend that you bring a favorite repellant along for your trip. We will have plenty on hand to use and encourage its liberal application.
