ABOUT THE TRIP:
This provider offers guided and fully outfitted bank/wade fly fishing trips into the lakes and streams in the heart of the Alaska Range. Transportation is provided from the hostel to and from the Nenana River Landing about 8 miles from the hostel.
WHERE:
They fish the clearwater streams, rivers, and lakes around the Cantwell Alaska area. They have two types of trips available and we'll travel either by car or jet boat to various clearwater streams in the Alaska Range.
WHAT KIND OF FISH:
Arctic Grayling are the northernmost member of the trout family. They are the native and naturally reproducing species in the area.
WHAT TYPE OF FISHING:
They practice catch and release fly fishing using barbless hooks. Bank and wade fishing using hip waders offer good opportunities for catching or spotting Arctic Grayling.
SUITABILITY:
These trips are designed for all ages (over 12) and all levels of experience. The lakes, rivers and streams offer a great classroom to learn the beginner basics or to practice your own technique. Their guides will teach the first time angler as well as help refine the experienced fly caster.
WHAT IF I'M A BEGINNER?:
Their experienced but patient guides have taught many first time anglers and provide all the necessary tools and space to learn how to cast safely. You will learn the basics of fly equipment, dry and wet fly presentation, fish habitat, match the hatch theory and proper catch and release techniques.
FULL-DAY TRIPS:
Experienced anglers may wish to experience some of the area streams and rivers, which require longer travel times to access. Their guides know some great fishing holes, where they're biting and if the water clarity is good enough to fish successfully. On full day trips a lunch will be provided and we'll get you to the 4:00 p.m. train on time.
GUIDES:
Their guides are advanced first aid/CPR trained, insured, and all have current State of Alaska Fish and Game guide permits. By maintaining a maximum of 3 anglers per guide, they are able to provide as much instruction as each individual guest desires.
DEPARTURES:
Three scheduled half-day trip departures and one full-day trip departure daily include round trip transportation to our base at the Nenana River Landing. Trips will arrive back at the hostel or the train depot in plenty of time for the noon train departure.
LUGGAGE:
If you wish to join the morning trip and need to be on the noon train, they suggest that you check out and bring your luggage with you for the trip. After fishing they will take you directly to the train depot instead of the hostel. If you are on the full day trip, the same procedure applies and They'll take you directly to the train depot in time for your 4:00 p.m. departure.
INCLUDED IN THE TRIP:
They supply roundtrip transportation, midweight fly rod and reel, line, flies, waders and all the instruction you need. For your convenience, there is a unisex porta-john toilet located near their headquarters at the Nenana River Landing. If you have your own rain-gear, they recommend you bring it; if necessary, they have rubber rainsuits available.
YOU SHOULD BRING:
Rain gear (tops and pants), hat with a brim, eye protection (prescription or sun glasses), an extra pair of socks, and an extra layer of clothing. The most important thing to bring along is an open mind and adventurous attitude, to help fully appreciate the beauty of this Alaskan experience.
WEATHER:
The weather in Alaska can and will change dramatically and quickly. It is a good idea to be prepared for any conditions. Layering is a good way to prevent overheating or getting cold. It is not uncommon for it to be a sunny morning at the hostel, yet breezy and raining 8 miles away.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST–MOSQUITOES:
These critters not only feed our fish, but can feed on us as well. Bugs can be annoying at times, so they recommend that you bring a favorite repellant along for your trip. We will have plenty on hand to use and encourage its liberal application.
